Design a book cover for one of the following:
a.) “Rosemary’s Baby” by Ira Levin: use complementary colors to express anguish and uncertainty.
b.) “Animal Farm” by George Orwell: use analogous colors with a contrasting accent to express disagreement and discontent.
c.) “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett: use secondary colors to express naivety, honesty and harmony.
The book cover must contain the title and the author’s name.
You must clearly make use of color to express the desired effects.
I chose to make a book cover for “The Secret Garden”. I used Illustrator for this lesson task. I think we are starting to become friends Illustrator and I. It took a lot of hours but I am very happy with the end result and the color use in this one. Here are my rough sketches. They always end up quite different from my first sketches. I have to see the finished product and a lot of the times I feel like something is missing and start playing around to see how I can make it better.
I made my own Purple color theme that I wanted to use for this lesson task. Then I drew the roses from a picture using the pen tool in Illustrator and the same with the key. So easy and fun even tough it took me some time. Then I played around with the colors to see what I liked and then when I was pleased with the rose, I made a lot of copies for the rose boarder. I used A oval to help me place them correctly. Then I chose a light purple for the background and placed the key and text. Then I felt something was missing. It looked so simple and boring. So I started to copy some roses and made them in different sizes and played around with the placement and transparency to get a much more interesting and secret look. I still felt something was missing and I just couldn’t put my finger on it. So I decided to take a little break and eat something. That always helps. Came back and looked again and that’s when it hit me that I needed a keyhole to complete the cover. So I added a keyhole to complete the look. So here it is my book cover for “The Secret Garden” By Frances Hodgson Burnett.
Hope you like it!
