Lesson Task – Understanding Positioning – Question 2 & 3

2. Let’s work backwards! Look at the logo on the Apple iPhone and, by doing your own research, investigate the history of the product and the company that manufactures it. Give an outline, in your own words, of what you consider the following to be:

  • Describe the iPhone’s brand identity – exactly as you see it
  • What do you think its positioning is currently?
  • What do you think the strategy for this specific product was?
  • What research do you think was done on this by the company who made it?

Describe the iPhone’s brand identity – exactly as you see it

The iPhone, I can still remember how I felt when I got my first iPhone. A new world of possibility’s right there, in your hand. Instant access to the internet, the revolutionary touchscreen, listening to music and downloading apps. A phone with a built in mini computer and camera. For me the iPhone is connection and communication. Endless possibilities, watch a movie, work form your iPhone answering e-mails or have a phone meeting. Influencers greatest tool. Shopping, everything just one click away. Face-time giving you a feeling of being together, seeing one another even tough you are nowhere near each other. I use this a lot especially after having children, giving them the opportunity to meet and see their grandparents that live in another country. Especially in this “dark” times when we cant travel to see each other. Its also where I found my passion for photography. Learning and failing by taking thousands and thousands of pictures. It is so much more than just a phone. Making your life so much easier, creating memories and keeping you in touch with family and friends.

What do you think its positioning is currently?

Everything you need the iPhone has it. Their costumers are loyal, I know I have been since my first iPhone starting with the iPhone 4 currently on iPhone X. My next phone is going to be a newer model of the iPhone, there is just nothing else. Positioning is nothing but an emotional value that you have towards a brand. And Apples branding strategy have always focused on emotion, innovation, design and imagination.

What do you think the strategy for this specific product was?

Designing a user friendly high-end smartphone. Offering superior software that you could sync with other Apple products.

What research do you think was done on this by the company who made it?

Steve Jobs believed that the cell phones was going to become important. Easy access to information. They studied the use of touchscreen devises and tablet computers and launched the first iPhone in 2007.

3. Now take the same product as in question 2 and explain, in your own words, how the visual element (in this case, the logo) fits in with the brand identity.

The Iconic Apple logo is one of the worlds most famous logos. Being a well known quality brand the logo makes you feel safe, a brand you can trust. You see it everywhere representing costumer loyalty. Simple, beautiful design, powerful and innovative. Always wanting more and waiting for the next iPhone to launch.
